US President Barack Hussein Obama, in his first news conference since taking office, has expressed hope to have direct talks with Iran.

During his first White House prime time news conference broadcasted live on Press TV, the US president spoke of his enthusiasm to engage in discussions with Iran in the near future 'where we can start sitting across the table, face to face.'

Obama stressed on 'mutual respect' between the two countries in order to make 'openings' for imminent negotiations with the Islamic Republic.

United States cut its diplomatic ties with Iran after the 1979 Islamic revolution that toppled the US-backed monarchy in Iran.
